Abstract

The carbonate fuel cell is of great interest for power generation, due to its high efficiency and clean conversion of chemical energy into electric energy. As with all fuel cell systems, the cathode is the major source of cell polarization. Electrode structure, electrolyte composition and operating condition all greatly influence cell performance. Single cell and large-area stack operations have demonstrated significant progress in performance and specific power enhancements. This paper will review the cell performance improvement achieved by FCE and others, through developments of advanced electrodes, electrolytes and operating conditions. In addition, the paper will also review parameters and approaches to improve the cell performance further.
