NCW traditions, Family Science Night and the NCW-Seaborg Tribute, have been celebrated annually since 1997 and 1999 respectively in the California Section. Making front page news as “Science Takes Center Stage in Hands-on Experiments,” our first Family Science Night was wildly successful in celebrating NCW's 10th Anniversary. California's Governor and Orinda's Mayor proclaimed November 2-8, 1997 as NATIONAL CHEMISTRY WEEK. Commendations were received from the State Superintendent of Education as well as a State Assemblywoman who described this program as a “model for the state.” Over 1,000 including 200 volunteers attended this first Family Science Night, co-sponsored with the local school district. The second Orinda Family Science Night drew crowds estimated at over 2,000. Best practices to recruit volunteers, organize Family Science Nights for different school districts plus highlights of the annual Seaborg Tribute celebrating NCW with over 50,000 fans on CAL's football field will be shared.
