| One of the roles of libraries is to preserve published materials. In the digital realm, this role is complicated by rapidly changing computer environments rendering digital resources unusable. As part of a continuing effort to preserve some of the best instructional computer software for chemistry, the Journal of Chemical Education Digital Library, a collection of the National Science Digital Library, has translated and transformed several titles. Much of this work has been accomplished with the help of a dedicated team of undergraduate students. Using modern programming methods and cross- platform computer technologies such as HTML and JavaScript allows these programs to now run in a variety of computing environments. Instructors can now efficiently integrate this software into the classroom and students can easily access the same materials outside of class. |
