Drug design requires knowledge of: protein structure, ligand/drug structure for the protein, search of databases for possible ligands, development of a pharmacophore model for a ligand/drug, examination of the ligand/drug for proper drug characteristics, and docking of the ligand/drug into the active site for fit. Most, if not all of these processes will be discussed and illustrated for HIV-1 integrase.
