In the past, we used a grafting-from approach to grow oligo(phenylene vinylene) from the surface of the CdSe quantum dots. This gives a mixture of polymer molecular weights on the nanoparticle surface. Here, we demonstrate the synthesis of phosphine oxide functionalized oligo(phenylene vinylene)s using Arbuzov coupling methodology, such that the ligands are all of the same molecular weight, and the heterogeneity of the system is reduced to the level of the size dispersion inherent to the CdSe nanoparticles.
