This paper describes a project designed to 1) find out what organic chemistry students are doing with respect to study outside the classroom, 2) determine what study techniques are most and least useful to the students, and 3) promote self-reflection in students about what actions help them learn. Students were asked to keep a study log for each week of the course and answer four reflective questions after each exam based upon a review of their study logs and exam scores. Correlations between exam grades and specific study techniques will be presented along with student perspectives about which study techniques were most useful in learning organic chemistry.
