Porous polymer particles have been widely used in many fields such as ion exchange, polymeric carrier, biomedical, biochemical, cosmetics, plastic pigment and special coatings. In this study, PMMA seed particles were first prepared by dispersion polymerization with the mixture of water and methanol as medium, and the influences of MMA and AIBN on seed particles were investigated. Then, seeded two-step swelling method was used to prepare porous micron-sized particles using 2-butanone as porogen and swelling agent, and uniform poly (methyl methacrylate - ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) (P(MMA- EGDMA)) particles with diameters from 3.2µm to 3.9µm and with open porous structure were prepared, and the influence of 2-butanone on the particle morphology was investigated.
