Selective sp2 or sp3 C-H activation is one of the most challenging tasks in organic and organometallic chemistry. Recently, our lab has investigated the C-H activation at a (MePNPi-Pr)Ir center. For example, the reaction of mesitylene with (MePNPi-Pr)IrH2 in the presence of norbornene afforded an sp2 aromatic C-H activation compound (MePNPi-Pr)Ir(H)(mesityl) 1. However, a striking result was obtained when 1 was treated with some neutral ligands. An sp3 C-H activation compound 2 was obtained. Thermolysis of 2 led to exclusive formation of 3. The mechanism of this C-H activation reaction was also investigated.
