As part of a larger study on the conceptual development of organic chemistry Doctoral candidates, we recently began investigating the learning outcomes of chemistry graduate students in all four of the traditional disciplines of chemistry. We interviewed graduate students in the department of chemistry at a large, research-oriented university. The focus of these interviews was to better understand what it means, from the student's perspective, to be a chemist and to know chemistry. We will present the results of this work, comparing and contrasting the students' views across the disciplines. Preliminary implications for graduate training will also be discussed.
