SFE was evaluated as an extraction technique to analyze polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) flame retardants in interior dust samples. Dust was extracted using supercritical 1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane (R-134a) at 150 °C and 250 atm. Following a SPE cleanup step on the extracted PBDEs, GC-MS-MS analysis was used to quantify seven PBDE congeners. The accuracy of the method was determined by comparing the concentration of the seven PBDE congeners to the levels in NIST certified dust. Results of the SFE method will be presented and implications for levels in interior dust samples.
