| A variety of analytical techniques have been used to authenticate a 17th century Dutch genre oil painting (on canvas glued to panel) in collaboration with Winterthur and the University of Delaware Art Conservation Department. Preliminary, non-destructive elemental analysis by XRF indicates that the pigments are not in conflict with the pigments commonly during the period. Pigment cross-sections will be taken and analyzed by SEM-EDX, Raman, and FTIR microscopy and the varnish will be analyzed by LC-MS. Infrared reflectography and x-ray photography will be used to study the underdrawing and pentimenti. Working together with art historians the analytical results will be assimilated into a theory regarding the working methods of the artist and the painting's provenance in 17th century Netherlandish art. |
