In 1998, Wagner College created The Wagner Plan for the Practical Liberal Arts, an innovative curriculum that emphasizes the use of learning communities. The Department of Physical Sciences at Wagner College has incorporated several general chemistry courses into this Plan, particularly in the first-year learning communities where the introductory course is linked to a course in another discipline. Wagner College has seen a significant increase in the number of chemistry majors since adopting this new curriculum. We will discuss multiple factors which may contribute to this increase, and based on student assessment, how the incorporation of general chemistry into learning communities has strongly influenced students' selection of chemistry as a major.
