The synthesis and reactivity of the niobium oxo complex ONb(OC[Ad]Mes)3(OEt2) (1, Ad = 2-adamantylidene, Mes = 2,4,6-C6H2Me3) is presented. Complex 1 can be activated by trifluoroacetic anhydride to generate the five coordinate bis trifluoroacetate complex (OAcF)2Nb(OC[Ad]Mes)3 (2, OAcF = OC(O)CF3). Complex 2 has been converted to the bis iodide complex I2Nb(OC[Ad]Mes)3 (3) by treatment with iodotrimethylsilane. Focus is placed on the reduction of complex 2 or 3 by two electrons to generate a reactive Nb(III) species that has shown the capacity to effect the two electron reduction of various small molecules.
