We recently began a study designed to probe the conceptual development of organic chemistry graduate (Ph.D.) students during the course of their membership in research groups. Although there was little, if any, evidence of maturation in that realm, there did, however, appear to be a significant disconnect between students and their mentors on what the students should learn while in graduate school. Therefore, a follow-up interview with the students was conducted to ascertain the following points: 1.) What does it mean to know organic chemistry? and 2.) What does it mean to be an organic chemist? Similar questions were also asked of their research mentors. This presentation will present the results of this study and discuss implications for graduate education.
