Burkholderia cenocepacia is an opportunistic pathogen that is clinically relevant in immunodeficient and cystic fibrosis patients. The genome of the J2315 strain has recently been sequenced at the Sanger Institute. This sequence was used to identify and clone the gene for a putative penicillin-binding protein from the open reading frame identified as BCAM 2456. The cloning and overexpression of the gene product into E. coli will be described.
