COLL 223 |
| In the chromonic liquid crystals of some aromatic compounds in water, chromonic liquid-crystalline (LC) molecules associate in sandwich-type via dispersion force to form LC columns. It is important to elucidate the arrangements of these LC columns. In the present study, the influence of a shear strain have been investigated on the electronic absorption spectra of the chromonic liquid crystals of four bisazo dyes (CongoRed(CR), AcidRed151(AR), PonceauBS(PBS), PonceauSS(PSS)) in water to get the spectroscopic informations regarding the influence of the shear strain on the array structures of the chromonic LC columns. The shear strain on chromonic liquid crystal has induced a far greater spectral change for CR than for AR, PBS and PSS. This result indicates that the interaction between LC columns is weaker for CR than for AR, PBS and PSS and that the microscopic long-range array structure of LC columns of CR is destroyed by the shear strain. |
