Side-on dinitrogen complexes have been of interest due to their increased reactivity and potential for dinitrogen reduction. In the past, our group investigated the diverse and extensive chemistry of chromium nacnac complexes. We present here the synthesis, structure and reactivity of a nacnac chromium(I) dinitrogen complex - Bis[2,4-Pentane-N,N'-bis (2,6-disopropylphenyl) ketiminato] (μ222-N2) dichromium (I). The use of this complex as a catalyst for selective ethylene oligomerization to hexene will be presented. Formation of hexene was found to be first order in catalyst and second order in ethylene pressure. In addition, the reactivity of this complex with various small molecules will be discussed. Particularly the transformation from side-on to end-on dinitrigen upon addition of ammonia will be shown.
