Rh(I) catalyzed cycloisomerization/annulation of alkynyl benzaldehydes with 1,3-dicarbonyls will be described. Utilizing this convergent approach, we have successfully designed and synthesized a library of 192 complex polycyclic ketals with a wide range of diversity. Initial mechanistic investigations to study the reaction course will also be described.
