Olefin metathesis transformations are performed efficiently using ruthenium-benzylidene pre-catalysts but also by the scarcely studied ruthenium-indenylidene complexes. Kinetic studies on ring-closing metathesis and a thorough evaluation of catalytic performance of phosphine- and NHC-containing (NHC = N-heterocyclic carbene) ruthenium catalysts have been carried out in olefin metathesis cyclization reactions. Substrate steric hindrance was found crucial to determine the most competent pre-catalyst.
