The use of the reagent N-Isopropylidene-N'-2-nitrobenzenesuolfonyl hydrazine (IPNBSH) for the reduction of alcohols will be presented. IPNBSH can be used to convert an alcohol to the corresponding monoalkyl diazene intermediate under mild reaction conditions. Loss of dinitrogen from these transiently formed monoalkyl diazenes leads to the reduction product.
