| Few students majoring in art, drama, music, television, film/video, radio, journalism, dance, etc. take courses that cover subject matter at the cutting edge of chemistry. At Columbia College - Chicago, these students, the future artists and communicators of our society, receive an interdisciplinary laboratory based experience in the course “Frontiers of Science”. In this course, students are introduced to such topics as: superconductivity; heavy metal poisoning; transportation advances; the chemistry of sports; exploring our universe and nanotechnology. These same students conduct laboratory activities on: the states of matter; analysis of Grecian Formula 16 for lead acetate content; the corrosion of iron; determination of potassium in sports drinks; spectroscopic identification of elements and compounds and the preparation of an aqueous ferro-fluid. Students are required to complete a final, original course project that incorporates their interests, hobbies, talents and/or cultural backgrounds with an area at the cutting edge of science. |
