Supramolecular chemistry plays an important role in today's material research. A wide range of compounds can be synthesized using terpyridine chemistry because of its excellent complexation ability with a large variety of transition metal ions (in low oxidation states). The synthesis of a symmetrical ruthenium bis-terpyridine complex under mild conditions is shown using Ru(DMSO)4Cl2 as precursor for the formation of the terpyridine mono-complex. The functionalized supramolecular complex was fully characterized by means of 1H NMR spectroscopy, UV-Vis, GPC, MALDI-TOF-MS as well as optical microscopy. The hyroxy-endgroups offer a great opportunity to further modify the molecule.
