A range of new chiral N-heterocyclic carbenes have been developed that can be used in various unique and highly enantioselective reactions with significant utility in chemical synthesis. Such catalytic asymmetric transformations include olefin metatheses, allylic alkylations and conjugate additions that deliver easily functionalizable products bearing all-carbon quaternary stereogenic centers. Design principles leading to the development of chiral NHC•Ru, NHC•Cu and NHC•Mg complexes that promote such processes, a select number of catalytic asymmetric methods and applications to target oriented synthesis will be presented.
