A series of 21 silver(I) complexes of cyanoximes - compounds having general formula NC-C(NOH)-R where R is an elecronwithdrawing group - were obtained in high yield using the ion exchange reaction between alkali metal cyanoximates and silver(I) sources such as nitrate, triflate and acetate. Synthesized complexes were studied using solid state IR (Nujol mulls), UV-visible and fluorescence spectroscopy and X-ray analysis. Crystal structures were determined for 5 new complexes and evidenced in all cases formation of coordination polymers. There are three-, four- or five-coordinated silver(I) atoms in these structures, and central atom forms short covalent bonds with the nitrogen atom of the CN-group of the cyanoxime ligands. Obtained Ag(I) complexes represent an excellent precursors for the high-yield synthesis of biologically active organotin(IV) and organoantimony(V) compounds via fast, room temperature heterogeneous metathesis reaction with respective organometallic halides. Reported silver(I) cyanoximates exhibit a remarkable insensitivity towards visible light, but develop a sharp and contrast image being exposed to the high energy photons such as UV light. Areas of potential application of these compounds are discussed.
