| Our interdisciplinary undergraduate program of Integrated Science, Business and Technology (ISBT) incorporates elements from the traditional disciplines of physics, chemistry, computer science, biology, engineering and business administration and has enabled our graduates to obtain employment in areas including Technical Project Management, Informatics, Logistics, Operations, Compliance, and Research. Serving as an enhancement to our physical laboratory-based courses, the Virtual Control Room (VCR) laboratory allows our students to learn how laboratory processes can be monitored, controlled and recorded remotely. Building upon experiments in measurement and instrumentation, the VCR is used to instruct students on the topics of laboratory networking, database management, data analysis, data mining and informatics. VCR applications created by our students are being used to support student research and laboratory projects that utilize equipment, such as bioreactors, incubators and spectrometers. In addition to the instrument monitoring aspect, the students use the VCR for collaborative project management and agile software development. The authors gratefully acknowledge the financial support of the NSF (DUE 0310813) for support of this project. |
