The novel γ-lactone, 1, was recently isolated from the Red Sea soft coral S. trocheliophorum that has been shown to inhibit the growth of certain bacteria. Our efforts are focused on using palladium coupling methods to facilitate a convergent construction of the lactone with the unsaturated side chain. The nonpolar side chain will be constructed through the use of a Stille mono-coupling using the highly sensitive 1,1-vinylidene dibromide.
