| Silicone has been used in the human body since the 1940s, shortly after it first became commercially available. From those earliest days in the development of silicone technology, imagination and pressing need have inspired artists and scientists alike to create things from silicone to benefit humankind. This talk will introduce you to an amazing variety of biomedical silicone applications developed over the last sixty years, from implantable 3D body art to medical devices that save lives and many places in between. We will also briefly review the fundamental molecular properties of silicone that impart the material characteristics vital to safe and effective performance in humans as well as the molecular building blocks and architecture of this extraordinary material. |
