A synthetic route toward a novel γ-lactone, 1, isolated from the Red Sea soft coral S. trocheliophorum is currently under investigation. The natural product has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria, namely Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis. Our efforts are focused on using palladium coupling methods to facilitate a convergent construction of the lactone fragment with the unsaturated side chain.
