Transformations of benzannulated enediynes 1a and 1b to 5-(2-methoxy-1-naphthyl)- and 5-[2-(methoxymethyl)-1-naphthyl]-11H-benzo[b]fluorene (2a and 2b) in a single cascade sequence were promoted by potassium t-butoxide in refluxing toluene. The structures of 2a and 2b could be regarded as 2,2'-disubstituted 1,1'-binaphthyls with the benzofluorenyl moiety containing a naphthyl group newly constructed during the course of the reaction.
