A large group of organotin polyamines have been synthesized from reaction with various diaminopyrimidines. F MALDI MS was carried out on these products and some of the results are reported here. While 2,5-dihydroxybenzoic acid has been recommended as a matrix material for polymers we found that it forms a number of unwanted compounds with the organotin polymers. In fact, over the low mass range, the majority of high intensity ion fragments are derived from reaction of the diorganotin with the matrix. As in other studies, bond scission occurs at heteroatom sites with only moderate loss of the alkyl groups on the tin and here only at the site of bond scission. Isotopic abundance matches for one, two, and three tin-containing ion fragment clusters were identified. Ion fragments to about 150,000 daltons were found for some of the samples. In summary, with the exception of low mass ion fragments containing the matrix, F MALDI MS is a useful tool in identifyinig the repeat unit of the polymers.
