EI F MALDI MS of the polyethers derived from the interfacial condensation of zirconocene dichloride and hafnocene dichloride with diethylstilbestrol was carried out. For the zirconocene product ion fragments to a mass of 150,000 daltons were found. Ion fragment clusters consistent with the present of one and two zirconium atoms are found. For the hafnocene polymer, ion fragments to about 130,000 are found. Isotopic abundance matches are found for ion fragment clusters containing one hafnium atom. For both of the samples there is some M-Cp loss but as in other studies this loss appears to occur only at the site of bond scission. Other sites of bond scission occur along the polymer backbone generally at the heteroatomed linkages.
