| Most water utilities in the United States employ conventional water treatment, which includes coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation, filtration and disinfection. Water companies also must manage water quality in the distribution system and respond to customers' water quality issues. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is continuously modifying and revising as well as promulgating many current/new regulations to protect public health. At the same time, customer's expectations on water quality have been higher and higher over the past decade. To comply with regulatory requirements and meet customer expectations, the drinking water industry must continue to improve water quality through advanced water supply and treatment techniques. As a leader in water industry, Louisville Water Company (LWC) has long been involved in drinking water research. The principal objectives of this presentation are two folds following a brief introduction of LWC's water research program: 1). the water quality challenges LWC faces; and 2). treatment options LWC has and can employ to attack these challenges. |
