| Over the past four years, the University of Wisconsin Colleges Chemistry Department has used ACS exams to assess student learning in chemistry. These data show that students perform at or above the national averages on a majority of the selected topic areas, but that one area of weakness is students' ability to relate numbers to units, equations, and graphs. We dub this weakness to be one of “numeracy”. We have obtained Scholarship of Teaching and Learning grants to involve chemistry and math instructors in generating and implementing ideas to improve student “numeracy”. Our aims were to identify, implement, and assess various teaching approaches in this area. This presentation will discuss assessment findings prior to this project, process of generating ideas to improve numeracy, some numeracy-improvement strategies that individual chemistry department members have implemented, and resulting early assessment findings. The future direction of the project will be discussed. |
