| This talk will provide an overview of the DECRE (Device to Evaluate Chemistry Reform Efforts) instrument, which is currently being utilized to help monitor aspects of the NSF funded CASPiE project. The instrument is simple to administer, easy to score, and can be utilized quickly to provide guidance to science educators. Basic steps will be described that were used to author items, choose a rating scale, evaluate the psychometric functioning of the instrument, and select appropriate statistical analysis techniques for the analysis of data collected with this device. The creation of subscales from subsets of DECRE items will also be discussed. DECRE consists of 40 attitudinal items. The items were created by utilizing goals of the CASPiE project and reflecting upon lessons learned in the initial stages project implementation. Although developed for CASPiE, the instrument should be easily utilized (or adapted) for the evaluation and monitoring of similar chemistry reform efforts over time. The potential for this for those interested in the development, adaptation and improvement of surveys used to collect attitudinal data will be reviewed. |
