Chemistry for the community: Lead levels in the city

CHED 175

Scott A. Schlipp, sschlipp@uwm.edu, Department of Chemistry, Milwaukee Area Technical College, 1928 S. 31 street, Milwaukee, WI 53215
In this ever increasing complex world it is important to reach out to the community and teach how chemistry directly affects their lives. The efforts of the Milwaukee Area Technical College Chemistry Department continue to bring chemistry to the community by testing resident's households for levels of lead. The interaction between the students and residents allows for a two-way education. In one way residents learn the effects of lead, where the lead originated, where it goes, and how chemistry deals with this problem. The second way allows for students to learn the techniques of research by identifying the problem, gathering samples, data collection, and analyzing the data.
