This presentation will report our recent implementation of a one week lab intensive chemistry of materials course open to all science majors who have taken general chemistry. The goal of this course was to introduce students to the emerging field of nanotechnology. Students synthesized and characterized a variety of nanomaterials, including quantum dots, nanowires, nanophase phosphors, and sol-gels for chemical sensors. Emphasis was placed on the applications of the nanomaterials, the potential societal implications, and hands-on use with characterization techniques such as scanning probe microscopy. The unique design and outcomes of this intersession course will be discussed.
