Public participation in the form of open access initiatives and web blogs are fracturing the once stable and predictable foundation of academic research and publishing. If the notion of the ‘public good' serves as the basis for these changes then, (using a geologic metaphor), these ‘intrusions' are most welcome, leading to a modification of the philosophical bedrock that supports the academic research process. Perhaps such an alteration will lead to the emergence of a true ‘public science.' This paper builds on that premise, offering an analysis of survey responses from life science faculty at UC Boulder, concerning societal participation and whether there is a discernable change reverberating through the academy
