As nationwide demographic changes point to the projection that the ethnic and racial minority populations will comprise fully half the U.S. population by the year 2050, comments such as “If there were only enough qualified applicants..” are the typical refrain when refereeing to the current lack of participation by underrepresented minorities at all levels of chemistry. The numbers of qualified applicants, however, are present and strengthening with each year. Areas of strength and strategies to effectively engage these communities of chemists will be presented.
