The Wellesley College Mentoring in Sciences Program was founded in 1994 to increase the participation and retention of students from underrepresented minority groups in the sciences. With funding from Howard Hughes Medical Institute, the program originally placed selected first-year students in faculty research labs, providing both an early research experience and a close connection with a science faculty member. Over the past 12 years, the program has evolved and now includes a significant academic support component in the first year followed by a research experience in the sophomore year or the summer following the first year. Originally comprising the chemistry and biological sciences departments, the program now includes faculty members in many scientific disciplines, including physics, mathematics, and computer science. This presentation will discuss the current program at Wellesley, with an emphasis on lessons learned over the history of the program.
