The Knoevenagel condensation reaction of m- or p-phthaldialdehyde is known to yield the corresponding benzenediacrylic acids. However, when o-phthaldialdehyde is reacted under these conditions 1-indanone is the major product in moderate yield. The mechanism of this reaction was investigated through GC-MS analysis. In order to optimize the yield of 1-indanone, the solvent, reaction time, and temperature of the reaction were varied. Results of the investigation will be discussed.
