The NSF-sponsored Northern Plains Undergraduate Research Center (NPURC) involves a partnership of seven institutions consisting of public universities, private and tribal colleges. The overall center's goal is increasing access and opportunities for research for undergraduate students. To reach the greatest number of students, NPURC has implemented a series of research activities designed for first year students. These activities include authentic research experiences in the general chemistry laboratory, weeklong research workshops and intensive summer research experiences. In Fall 2005 and Spring 2006, the University of South Dakota, Mount Marty College and Augustana College implemented research experiences centered around a novel group of tetraalkylammonium salts. Ionic liquids have been the subject of intense research efforts throughout the world in the past decade for their possible use as renewable solvents for chemical reactions. The mechanics of implementing and assessment of the effort will be presented in the panel discussion on NSF funded URC's.
