The goal of this project is to synthesize polyarylethers using CF2 as an activating group. Traditionally poly(aryl)ethers are synthesized with groups such as ketones as activators. This project will report the success of using a novel activating group. The first step is to synthesize the monomer. We are attempting this by first making the dithiolane from 4,4'-difluorobenzophenone. This reaction is simple to run and produces good yields. The fluorinating step must be carried out at -78º C, and does not yet produce a high yield. Finally bis-(4-fluorophenyl)-difluoromethane is polymerized with hydroquinone. The progress of this research will be reported.
