A series of substituted anilines were reacted with 2,4-pentanedione to prepare E-4-anilino-3-pentene-2-one and several derivatives. In addition, several substituted aniline compounds were reacted with methyl acetoacetate to produce methyl 3-anilino-2-butenoate and several of its derivatives. Two methods of preparing these compounds were studied. The first was the standard method of refluxing in an apparatus equipped with a water trap. The second method used a microwave radiation technique.
