The "Learning Online Network with Computer-Assisted Personalized Approach" (LON-CAPA) is an open source course management system and online homework, exam and assessment tool developed at Michigan State University. I have adapted the LON-CAPA problem authoring tools to develop templates for online submission and grading of general chemistry lab reports. In a typical experiment, students collect data and enter it into a LON-CAPA experiment problem. They answer questions and do calculations based on their data and enter these results into LON-CAPA. LON-CAPA is programmed to use the entered data and do the same calculations that students are required to do. In LON-CAPA, student answers are compared to LON-CAPA answers within a preset tolerance and identified as correct or incorrect. This presentation will illustrate with several lab report examples the design and use of LON-CAPA for online lab report submission and grading.
