In 1975, the Journal of Chemical Education published a paper written by J. Dudley Herron entitled “Piaget for Chemists: Explaining what ‘good' students cannot understand.” This introduction of cognitive psychology into the examination of how students learn chemistry signaled a quantum leap forward for the field of chemistry education research. This presentation will reflect upon the role of learning theory in advancing chemistry education research and our collective debt to Dudley for his insights.
