Using the software package DyKnowTM allows students to submit their work electronically in response to an in or out of class exercise. During class, the software allows the response of individual students to be shared with the entire class in real time. Additionally, the interactive electronic note-taking feature enhances the quality of student's notes. Students dynamically receive the content ‘written on the board' at their computer station. The students then annotate the material enhancing what they take away from each class session because they no longer struggle to catch every subscript or functional group. Their focus is on supplementing what I write with their interpretations about what I say. The pen-based feature of the software allows students to annotate freehand in addition to using keyboard input. This talk will briefly introduce the tool and then focus on the evidence that using this electronic tool has enhanced student learning.
