| A favorite reaction in undergraduate organic chemistry laboratories is the isomerization of menthone to isomenthone. The reaction is carried out by heating menthone in the presence of a catalytic amount of sulfuric acid in acetic acid. The reaction results in an equilibrium mixture of diastereomers. The composition of the mixture is determined using polarimetry. Unfortunately, the equilibrium mixture of the ketones has an optical rotation of 0 degrees. A combination of molecular modeling and NMR spectroscopy is used to analyze the product mixture. |
