Elementary teachers face the daily challenge of developing literacy skills in their students. Emphasis on reading and writing literacy often comes at the expense of science literacy; many teachers report there is not enough time to teach science. This research describes a partnership between the chemistry department and K-2 teachers in a local school district. Award winning children's literature (both fiction and non-fiction) was mapped to Ohio's Academic Content Standards for K-2 science strands. Hands-on inquiry activities using the 5E cycle were developed for this literature. Preliminary findings will be reported.
