Is social networking the next big thing in using computers to teach chemistry or is it just another glitzy flash-in-the-pan? Which aspects of social networking may become commonplace in chemistry classrooms of the coming decade; which will be used, but not commonly; and which will be discarded or replaced by something even more futuristic? Will Second Life have as great an impact on our society in the coming decade as the WWW did in the past decade? Can chemists find effective ways to use Second Life for teaching chemistry? There are probably too many variables and too much uncertainty for any reasonable person to hazard a guess about what is coming, but this paper will attempt to answer these and other questions.
