| Since the introduction of our forensic chemistry survey course in 2000 we have noticed a marked increase in both the enrollment and the percentage of non-majors taking the class. Last spring non-majors represented 63% of those enrolled. Students can take this class to satisfy liberal studies distribution requirements. Since there is a wide range of scientific preparedness among such a diverse group of students, a sizable number struggle with the scientific concepts. It has become increasingly difficult to keep all students engaged with the material. This presentation will describe changes made to our curriculum to enhance student learning, particularly among non-majors. The new curriculum, to be introduced in spring 2007, will be taught using a backdrop of late 19th to late 20th century British and American crime fiction. This “science-in-fiction” approach will hopefully engage the non-majors and also expose the chemistry majors to a broader range of literature. |
